Since the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires, our governments have spent over $40 billion in public money supporting the continued expansion of the fossil fuel industry through subsidies and tax breaks.

Every minute, over governments hand over $21,143 to the fossil fuel industry.

It's time our governments stopped handing our public money to the industries most responsible for climate change and stopped approving new coal and gas projects. It's time to invest in a safe climate.

Sign the petition urging the Australian government to stop all subsidies and tax breaks for fossil fuels and end new climate-heating coal and gas projects and infrastructure in Australia.

Petition demands

"To the Prime Minister, Energy Minister, Environment Minister and Treasurer:

End coal and gas in Australia to ramp up climate action. That means:

  • This decade, replacing existing coal, gas and uranium exports with a renewable-powered exports industry and climate-positive careers for communities
  • No new coal and gas projects or infrastructure
  • Stop spending public money on the fossil fuel industry – fund climate solutions instead."

A responsible government would use our public money to make our communities and wildlife thrive, not fund the industries damaging our climate. The Albanese Government has already taken some steps to advance climate ambition in Australia, but to truly slash climate pollution it must immediately end public funding for fossil fuels.

In the 2022-23 financial year, government subsidies for fossil fuels cost Australians $11.1 billion.

If we stop spending public money on fossil fuels now, we can help prevent even more damaging projects in the future. Currently, Australia has 114 new coal and gas projects, like Woodside's Scarborough project, in the pipeline and if the projects were to go ahead they would almost double our current domestic emissions. And that’s not including any emissions from exporting the coal and gas overseas!

For a safe climate future, let’s instead invest our public money into renewable exports that can replace coal and gas, slash pollution and create climate-positive jobs that future-proof our economy.

Sign the petition and call on our government to step up for climate action.

It’s time to change. You’ve all seen the facts. Start investing in sustainable energy platforms that put our existing ecosystems first!!!!

We already lost over 60% of the Great Barrier Reef. With continuous use of coal and other fossil fuels and greenhouses gases, we will loose reefs forever, along with the thousand species associated with them and all the economic services they provide humans. And then all other ecosystems will collapse. The European Court for Human Rights has ruled that Switzerland has failed to protect its citizens from Climate Change and to take enough actions to reduce its emission. Australia could be the next one. It is imperative that Australia, as the most polluting country of the G20, takes action to STOP COAL now.

Australians do not need more gas to accelerate climate change. Invest in renewables – we can. Exporting even more gas and degrading our environment in the process makes absolutely no sense at all! What are you doing labour government? I was a big fan of yours but enough is enough!!! Susan Inglis

I want to end gas exploration because we have enough gas. Especially I want to stop gas exploration and seismic testing in our oceans – our planet is too fragile

Expanding gas operations is not compatible with meeting our climate agreements and stabilizing emissions and is putting us in danger of more frequent and more severe extreme events

We are on track to blast through the 1.5 degree centigrade of global warming and even limiting this 2.0 still promises catastrophic outcomes in Australia and globally. We cannot afford ANY new fossil fuel projects and the transition away from coal and gas needs to happen now. The Albanese government is jeopardising our future. Do better, do it immediately.

We cannot on the one hand say we want to stop climate change and on the other keep approving the expansion of gas projects. We’re already unable to keep global temperature increases below 1.5C. More gas being extracted and burned will accelerate this. Not in my name and not with my tax dollars.

I want australia to transition out of gas use. We do not need new gas stations. The public should be incentivised to use renewable energy sources.

Everyday I awaken to anxiety in the pit of my stomach about the chaos of climate change and the lack of care politicians in Australia have shown to the beautiful land of our country. I implore these politicians to look into the future and not think about the money they could gain, and instead think of what would benefit the world, environment and humanity. It is a disgrace against humankind to continue investing in the fossil fuel industry, whilst knowing information from experts across the globe that these have detrimental impacts which we are already seeing. Please, please think of the future, be reasonable and understanding. Why is this a weight on the common peoples shoulders when it is you decision makers who are to blame?
